Ms. Mary Ferrell has taught full time in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction since 1989; she teaches media and technology courses for K-12 majors. She was the assistant director of Appalachian State's Teaching Fellows program for six years. She earned her B.A. degree in biology from Pfeiffer University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and salutatorian of her class. She earned her teaching certificate and Master's degree in Biology from Appalachian State University. Her research was done at UNC-CH School of Medicine in the area of neuroscience of the brain and spinal cord, specifically axon collaterals of spinal laminae I and II. She has presented at conferences such as the Association of Southern Biologists, National Society of Neuroscience, and SITE (Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education). Prior to teaching at Appalachian, she taught biology, physical science, math, and computers to at-risk students at Watauga High School in Boone.
