Dr. Sara Olin Zimmerman, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Appalachian's Reich College of Education, has been named interim department chair. Zimmerman began her new role in June 2017.
Dr. Zimmerman also directs the Curriculum Specialist program and teaches both undergraduate and graduate level classes.
She was hired by Appalachian in 1991 and has received the following teaching commendations:
- Appalachian State University Excellence in Teaching Award, 2010-2011
- Student Government Association Outstanding Teacher Award, 1999-2000
- Board of Governors' Appalachian State University School/College Teaching Awards 1996-1997
Dr. Zimmerman received her Ph.D. in special education and administration, M.A. in education, B.A. in psychology and human development, and B.S. in education from the University of Kansas. She began her career as a public school teacher in both regular and special education classrooms.
Her research interests include effective use of instructional strategies and diverse learners, international education and curriculum development in developing countries, effective use of technology with ELL students, cognitive tasks and virtual worlds, and children's perceptions of science.
